Modernise your core without rebuilding it

Legacy core elements reach end of life one at a time, but the upgrade quotes treat the whole network as one project. A full rebuild means risk, downtime, and a budget you cannot justify. Ouroboros lets you replace individual core elements over standard interfaces and migrate toward virtualised, 4G, or 5G in stages.

Your 2G/3G core still carries traffic, but the hardware is ageing and the vendor is winding down support. Components are reaching end of life, and the replacement conversation keeps turning into a conversation about replacing everything.

A rip-and-replace migration is the riskiest way to modernise. It puts live traffic on the line, demands a long maintenance window, and commits the budget in one large block. For a network that has to stay up, that is a hard project to approve.

Meanwhile the network has to keep moving toward 4G and 5G. You need a path that adds the new generations without standing down the old ones before they are ready to retire.

The choice should not be keep the legacy core or rebuild it all. It should be replace what is failing, add what is next, and leave the rest running.

02

Ouroboros provides all the key core elements you need to migrate from your current generation toward 3G, 4G, LTE, and 5G. The migration is staged, not wholesale.

Replace individual elements. End-of-life components such as the HLR, MSC, SMSC, or GGSN can be replaced one at a time. Each new element connects over standard interfaces, so the rest of the network stays in place while you swap the part that is failing.

Connect over interfaces you already run. The elements speak SS7, SIGTRAN, Diameter, and SIP. They interwork with your existing nodes, which is what makes a staged migration possible rather than a synchronised cutover.

Migrate toward the generation you choose. Move to a virtualised core, to 4G/LTE, or to 5G, on your timeline. The same vendor covers each step, so you are not changing supplier as the network advances.

Add value-added services along the way. Once modernised elements are in place, you can layer on services such as mobile banking, social USSD, and customer-experience tools, using the platform you have already migrated to.

Network Migration Consulting is available to plan the sequence: what to replace first, how the interfaces interwork, and how to keep traffic live throughout.

01

Running end-of-life hardware

A core component is going out of support and the vendor is quoting a wholesale upgrade. Replace that element over standard interfaces and leave the working parts of the network untouched. You address the failing node without funding a rebuild.

02

Virtualising a physical core

Your legacy nodes run on dedicated hardware and your current vendor cannot virtualise them without a forklift change. Migrate elements onto a virtualised platform in stages and move off proprietary hardware at a pace the network can absorb.

03

Adding 4G or 5G to a 2G/3G network

You need to introduce a new generation without standing down the old one. Add the new core elements alongside the legacy core, interwork them over standard interfaces, and retire the old nodes only when you are ready.

04

Adding services to a legacy network

Your network runs, but it cannot carry the services your market now expects. Modernise the relevant elements and layer on value-added services such as mobile banking or social USSD on the updated platform.

05Why Ouroboros

A staged migration needs a vendor who can supply every element you will touch and interwork with everything you keep. Ouroboros provides the full set of core elements across 2G to 5G on one platform, so the migration does not fragment into several vendor projects.

02

Standard interfaces are what make it staged rather than wholesale. SS7, SIGTRAN, Diameter, and SIP let new elements sit beside legacy nodes, so you replace what is failing and retire the rest on your own schedule.

03

The team that planned migrations like yours is the team you talk to, and Network Migration Consulting helps you sequence the work before the first element moves.

Modernisation rarely starts with a clean slate. It starts with one element going end of life and a quote to rebuild the lot. Before you commit to a wholesale upgrade, let us look at which elements you need to replace first and how a staged migration keeps traffic live. Send us your current core inventory and the generation you are heading toward.
